A Major Milestone for Florida Studio Theatre's New Arts Plaza

Last week marked a significant milestone for Florida Studio Theatre (FST) as it moves forward with its ambitious plan to transform a gravel parking lot on First Street into a vibrant new Arts Plaza.

Following a $1 million grant from the state of Florida for the affordable housing component of the multi-use Arts Plaza, FST received a generous $2 million donation from Cheryl Gorelick and Jake Zeigler. This gift is part of The Maier Match Challenge, which supports the “McGillicuddy Circle of Friends” in honor of long-time benefactors Dennis and Graci McGillicuddy. The dollar-for-dollar match brings the total contribution to $4 million.

Announced in May by benefactors Ed and Susan Maier, the challenge will match donations toward the Arts Plaza up to $4 million. So far, the challenge has raised $2.6 million. To date, FST has secured $41 million toward the $46 million needed for the first phase of the project. This phase includes the construction of an eight-story building, the opening of a parking garage, and three stories of artist and arts employee housing.

The total cost of the project is $57 million. Phase 2 will feature the buildout of two cabaret theaters, a kitchen and food service stations, dressing rooms, a bar and lounge area, and public restrooms. Phase 3 will add a second mainstage theater, a lobby, and concessions area.
