Sweeet Sparkman Selected as Architect of Record for Sarasota's New Performing Arts Center

Local architectural firm Sweeet Sparkman has been chosen as the architect of record for the upcoming Sarasota Performing Arts Center (SPAC). This decision follows the selection of renowned Italian-based firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) as the design architect for the project, approved in 2018 to be built on The Bay campus.

After careful deliberation and reviewing nearly 30 national applications, RPBW has selected Sweeet Sparkman to handle the construction and documentation aspects of the project. Sweeet Sparkman architect and founder Todd Sweeet emphasizes the collaboration between the firms, highlighting their local knowledge and experience with the site.

With 22 years of practice, Sweeet Sparkman has completed various cultural and community projects, including The Bay, the Center for Asian Art at the Ringling Museum of Art, and others. The new SPAC, projected to cost $275 million, is a significant endeavor funded through a public-private partnership.

Concerns about the future of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall have arisen, given the new center’s development. While there’s an acknowledgment of the need for a larger, modern facility, there’s also a desire to preserve the Van Wezel as a beloved landmark, albeit with recognition of its limitations.
