Tickets On Sale Now for Sarasota MOD Weekend 2024: A Celebration of Architectural Reawakening

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Sarasota MOD Weekend, taking place from November 14-17, with the captivating theme of “reawakening.”

John Howey, the author of the definitive book The Sarasota School of Architecture, described the early 20th-century rise of the Sarasota School of Architecture as “the awakening.” This movement included influential architects such as Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell, Victor Lundy, Gene Leedy, Frank Folsom Smith, and Carl Abbott. MOD Weekend’s theme is a nod to this concept, focusing on the revived—or reawakened—interest in the Sarasota School’s architectural legacy, the restoration of iconic structures like the Revere Quality House and Umbrella House, and the inspiration drawn by a new generation of architects from their Sarasota School predecessors, who were trailblazers in sustainable, climate-adaptive design.

This year’s MOD Weekend will feature returning favorites such as yoga at the Umbrella House, a Lido Shores walking tour, and a Siesta Key kayak tour. Kicking off the event on Thursday, November 14, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Columbia University architectural historian Dr. Barry Bergdoll will deliver a keynote speech discussing the transformations in American modernism in the late 20th century. The opening party will be held on Friday, November 15, at downtown Sarasota’s McCulloch Pavilion. On Saturday, November 16, a design symposium featuring three yet-to-be-announced experts will take place at Siesta Key Chapel. The weekend will conclude with a brunch and panel discussion on Sunday, November 17, featuring architects who continue to uphold the principles established by the Sarasota School.

Tickets start at $50 for children and students, and $75 for adults, with package pricing available and discounts for Architecture Sarasota members. For more information and to view the full schedule of events
